About Me:
My name is Paul Boxcer and I qualified as a Chartered Physiotherapist from the University of East London in 1997.
After graduating as a Physiotherapist, I spent several years working in different hospitals and clinics throughout England. This was then followed by my desire to visit the other side of the world and work in Christchurch - New Zealand. While there, I was fortunate enough to work at SportsMed (one of the country’s leading sports clinics) and I was also first team physio for Canterbury University Rugby team.
However, following my return home I rekindled my passion for treating Low Back Pain & Sciatica, which in turn led me to developing my Personalised Treatment Approach for resolving this potentially debilitating condition, and also writing my book Low Back Pain & Sciatica - A Personalised Treatment Approach.
My Personalised Treatment Approach
I will not go into too much detail here with regards to my Personalised Treatment Approach here, as you may already know a fair amount about and this page is about my talk at The Nutri Centre. If you would like to know more, you can read about it here... Personalised Treatment Approach.
However, in short I believe we over complicate the majority of Low Back Pain and Sciatica that the general population suffer with, resulting in many people suffering unnecessarily in pain. My Personalised Treatment Approach is a 'back to basics' approach which uses common sense and also harnesses the body's fantastic desire to heal itself of any injury it encounters. My talk at The Nutri Centre will elaborate further...
Low Back Pain & Sciatica: Take control and resolve your pain
The term non-specific low back pain (NSLBP) is one which is widely used throughout the health profession and it is also widely accepted by the health profession that the majority of us who do encounter low back pain or sciatica are suffering with this type of pain (NSLBP).
This is even the case when imaging, such as MRI Scans and X-rays, may indicate that a structure such as a disc or arthritis of the spine is responsible for the pain. These are often red-herrings and studies have shown that many people going about their day-to-day lives, 100% pain free, still have disc bulges or arthritis in their spine, yet they are in no pain at all!
What would happen if one of these individuals were to develop an episode of low back pain or sciatica (completely unrelated to their disc bulge or arthritis) and they were then referred for an MRI Scan? I'll tell you now; the assumption would be they were suffering with their pain because of the disc bulge or arthritis. Well why were they not suffering before then? One of the main reasons would be because the disc bulge or arthritis is not the cause of pain, rather something else.
Through my years of experience of treating people with low back pain and sciatica, I undoubtedly believe the majority of us who suffer with low back pain or sciatica are more than capable of resolving the pain themselves, as long as they know what to do.
Treating and resolving your own low back pain or sciatica is possible due primarily to two facts:
i) NSLBP is a result of incorrect postures & movement patterns, along with muscle imbalance (the two of which go hand in hand and can create a kind of chicken and egg situation). When treating any injury, and in particular low back pain or sciatica, it is imperative the cause of the problem is addressed. These two causative factors of NSLBP are more than readily treated by the individual who is suffering with the pain.
ii) Your body’s innate desire to heal itself of any injury it encounters, including low back pain and sciatica. Having spoken to many, many low back pain and sciatica sufferers I am more than aware that there appears to be some kind of mystique around low back pain and sciatica. It’s almost as if a fear factor has been set up that “once you have had low back pain or sciatica, you will always suffer with it” (this is a very common view I hear, and one which frustrates me enormously as it could not be further from the truth) or that an ‘ex’ low back pain or sciatica sufferer needs to have regular check-ups/treatments to ‘keep their spine in-line’ or to ‘have their ‘spine re-adjusted’…
As I have just mentioned, your body has an innate desire to heal itself of any injury and as long as you provide it with the correct conditions (i.e. address the cause of the problem and not just the signs and symptoms, something which you are more than cap[able of doing this yourself) your body will also heal itself of the low back pain or sciatica you are currently suffering with.
My talk at The Nutri Centre will explain the main philosophy behind my Personalised Treatment Approach and also elaborate on these two above facts as to why you can resolve the low back pain or sciatica you are currently suffering with. I will also provide you with some useful tips on how to help resolve your pain followed by some time at the end to answer any questions you may have.
